Coimbatore: The midnight drag racing has been happening on and off in Coimbatore. While it was a menace in the Chennai Metropolitan area, the police arrested people who drink alcohol at night and race in two-wheelers and four-wheelers and brought the situation under control.

This racing culture is currently increasing in Coimbatore. Consumption of alcohol and driving at night often leads to accidents and loss of life.
Amid mounting complaints about this midnight car racing, yesterday night, Loganathan, a resident of Saibaba Colony (near BSNL office) had his auto smashed by a car that was racing at breakneck speed. The front of the auto was completely smashed.

Loganathan, the owner of the auto said Kingston, who lives nearby, has been renting and driving his auto for the past 18 months.
As usual he left the vehicle in the usual parking lot last night and went home. At around he said the vehicle was damaged when the youth involved in car racing collided with the auto.
Also he said, four to five youth who were driving under the influence of alcohol crashed into the door of the second entrance of Avinashilingam University and came fast on the opposite road and collided with the auto.
There would have been a major accident if there had been a collision with the transformer, he said, adding that in recent times there has been an increase in the involvement of young people in racing in these areas.

Surveillance cameras have been installed in several places in the area and the people of the area have demanded that the police take immediate action to arrest the culprits. He said he would lodge a complaint with the Variety Hall Road police station.
"There is a lack of security for life and property by young people who are involved in car racing and those who sleep at night on the side of the street.
Only by taking appropriate legal action without discrimination, against those who engage in such racing activities, can such incidents be gradually reduced in the future” said the public in the area.
