Coimbatore: Demanding permission from the government to install Vinayagar statues for worship during the Vinayagar Chathurthi festival, a member of the pro-Hindu outfit the Sakthi Sena sat in fast with a Vinayagar statue, causing a stir.

Sampath, a member of the Sakthi Sena sat in protest against the government's ban to place Vinayagar statues in public places for worship and celebration during the Vinyagar Chathurthi festival. He sat near the Siddhi Vinayagar temple near the Gandhipuram Bus stand.

The State's ban to conduct public celebrations is still in place and the festivities for the Vinayagar Chathurthi festival that falls on August 22 have also been banned.

Hindu outfits have demanded that the government must grant them permission to conduct the celebrations. Otherwise, they declared that they will go past the ban and hold the celebrations. Following this threat, a meeting was held at the District Collectorate, led by the District Collector to discuss this issue.

In continuation of their insistence, Sampath sat in protest demanding permission for the public celebration of Vinayagar Chathurthi. He raised slogans demanding the government to issue a notice permitting the installation of Vinayagar statues at all public places with the prescribed guidelines.

The police forcefully removed Sampath from the place and took him to the police van causing a stir in the area for some time.
