Coimbatore: Wild elephants that wandered into the residential areas at the tea estates near Valparai caused damage to two houses in the area, shocking the people of the locality.

After a brief hiatus, wild elephants from the forests in Valparai have started starying into residential areas again. There are more than 500 tea estate workers who reside in the Anamalai estate area. At dawn today, five wild elephants entered into the area residential area and broke the back doors and walls of the houses of two residents, Sengamalai and Jebamaalai.

Further, they entered into the houses and ate the rice and pulses. They also threw the utensils and objects in the house causing damage.

More than a 100 neighbours who heard the ruckus rushed to help. They made soundsby banging on utensils and after nearly an hour of effort they managed to chase the wild elephants back into the forests. The residents of the house were also rescued safely.

However, the back door and walls of the two houses were damaged completely. Forest department personnel who came to the spot upon receiving the information are currently monitoring the movement of the wild elephants since they have camped in the area and the residents of the area are scared that they might re-enter the area in the night.
