Coimbatore: Sale of liquor soared across Coimbatore district since early on Friday, tipplers rushed to stock up for the subsequent two dry days — Independence day and Sunday lockdown. On Friday, liquor sales in the district was Rs. 21.38 crore, an official told.

At many outlets, tipplers were seen waiting in long queues and throwing social distancing norms to winds, to buy liquor at the the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) in the district.
"There are totally 297 TASMAC outlets in Coimbatore district. For administrative convenience, the outlets are divided into North and South. There are 259 TASMAC stores in the North of Coimbatore, and liquor amounting to Rs 11 crore 83 thousand was sold in a single day, yesterday", an official confirmed.
"Similarly , 138 shops in Coimbatore South recorded a sales of Rs 10 crore 38 lakh. Hence, the total sale of liquor at TASMACs in Coimbatore district, stood at Rs 21,38,83,000 (21.38 crore) on Friday", he told.
