Coimbatore: In Pollachi, groundnut crops rot due to rains at harvest time making farmers suffer from 50 percent yield failure.

In Pollachi, farmers are engaged in groundnut cultivation alongside coconut and banana. Around 3000 acres of land is cultivated with groundnut in the areas around Pollachi including Puravipalayam, Vadakkipalayam, Servaikaranpalayam and Choolakkal.

Farmers have been cultivating groundnut for the last 3 months, but this time the yield has been affected due to excessive monsoon rains. On an average, one tonne of groundnut per acre is harvested during the yield season. Groundnut also fetched between Rs 35 and Rs 40 per kg. But this time the yield was affected due to untimely rains.

Due to this, groundnut is currently harvested only up to 500 kg per acre. The price of yield is going up to Rs. 20-25 rupees only. The income was about ₹40,000 rupees per acre, but now it is only ₹20000 rupees due to excessive rains. Groundnut farmers also lamented that it only covered the cost of plowing, harvesting, labor and seed.
