The Nilgiris Martien, which is on the verge of extinction, was spotted a few days ago. It was originally believed to be a black leopard because of the colour and size. This is because a few days ago, a black leopard was seen in Karnataka. The news even reached international media. After intense research, it was confirmed that the one spotted in Nilgiris was a Marten. It is noteworthy that it is not found anywhere else in India.

It is found in the Nilgiris and adjoining Western Ghats. Marten is a carnivorous animal in the family Mustelidae. The structure of its skull is also different. Apart from the tail, the body is 55 to 65 cm long and the tail is 40 to 45 cm long. Weight approximately 2.1 kg. It is found in the Nilgiris, south of Kodagu and Travancore.

It is a daytime predator. Trees are its habitat but occasionally it also comes to the ground. It feeds on small mammals, birds and cicadas. According to forest officials, it is known to frequent the vast tea estates in the Nilgiris .

Wildlife activists have requested thatstudies and reports on the endangered Nilgiri Martens be released and they be protected.
