Coimbatore: The public have requested for repairs to be undertaken on the Mettupalayam Coonoor Highway where there are potential landslide spots. They urged action before anything untoward happens.

The mountain road between Coonoor and Mettupalayam has witnessed landslides, causing trees to uproot. There are also places where huge rocks fall down the top of mountains along the water pathways. These appear to be sources of impending danger and the public have therefore requested the Highways Department to identify such spots and take action.

Motorists can travel to Nilgiris District either through the Coonoor or Kotagiri Roads. A majority of the travellers choose the Coonoor forest route.

Since the Southwest monsoons have showered abundant rains at various areas in the Nilgiris district, such as Gudalur, Coonoor and Avalanche, landslides have occured in many places. Repair has been undertaken at these places.

Under the circumstances, the prime road connecting the people of Nilgiris to Coimbatore, the Mettupalayam- Coonoor road has many potential landslide spots due to the rains.

Trees in these areas are hanging by the roots due to soil erosion. Huge rocks have been falling from the waterways from the top of the mountains. Hence travel through these roads is a risky undertaking.

The public have therefore insisted that the spots where the soil has eroded and are likely to cause landslides must be identified and repaired by the Highways Department.
