Coimbatore: Department of Horticulture has advised banana cultivators to insure before the deadline of August 31.
Farmers in Coimbatore district, Pollachi and surrounding areas are widely indulged in banana cultivation next to coconut farms.
Pollachi is located on the border of Kerala and is home to a large number of Nendran banana farms. Apart from this, various varieties including Kathali, Poovan and Sevvazhai are cultivated. In addition, many farmers are cultivating bananas as an inter-crop to coconut.
Natural disasters such as heavy rains and high winds usually cause huge losses to banana farmers. Therefore, the Horticulture Department is focusing on insuring the banana growers.
Currently, banana cultivation has started in the surrounding villages of Pollachi including Anamalai, Vettaikaranputhur, Aathu Pollachi and Puravipalayam. Thus, the farmers engaged in banana cultivation have been given time to insure the crop till the 31st by paying a specific premium.
The Department of Horticulture has advised crop loan borrowers to pay the premium at banks and non-borrowers at government public service centers and online.
