Coimbatore: Elephants in the Odanthurai Reserve forests, Mettupalayam were monitored with the help of drones.

Under the orders of the Coimbatore District Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Anwardheen and the advice of the District Forest Officer Venkatesh, elephant movement in the Mettupalayam forests were monitored with the help of drones.

Talking about this forest department officials said, "The use of drones can help us monitor the number of elephants in the forest area, their movement and their health. This will primarily help us to identify sick elephants at an early stage and monitor them. Places where elephants come out of the forests can be located and workers can be sent to those areas accordingly to see if the elephant herds can be sent back into the forests. The Sirumugai forest where a large number of elephants had died recently can now be monitored through drones and this gives some comfort."
