There are more than 4,000 streets within the Coimbatore Corporation and underground sewerage runs for more than 60 kms. A private company manufactured robots to clear blockages in the underground sewer canals.

In November, 2019 the first robot was purchased by the Coimbatore Corporation at a cost of Rs.36 lakhs. This robot was first used in the manhole near the Uppilipalayam signal to clear blockages.

Following this, Bharat Petroleum Corporation presented the Coimbatore Corporation with five latest robots costing Rs.2.12 crores, on July 17.

The robots were presented in the presence of Minister S.P. Velumani at the Corporation office. All the six robots are being used effectively and this has led the Corporation to consider purchase of four more such robots.

A Corporation official informed, "The underground sewers are cleaned effectively by the robots. Hence the Corporation is considering the purchase of four more such latest robots."
