Coimbatore: MLA N. has demanded that the NGR bridge over the Vellalore Noyyal river in Coimbatore be renovated with pillars and a wide upper bridge to prevent inflow of water from from the Noyyal river.

MLA N. Karthik in his press release said, "On the road from Singanallur to Vellalore, the NGR Bridge over the Noyyal River was built withblack stone many years ago. There are cracks in many places, walls and pillars of this ancient bridge and it is in danger of collapsing any time."

He added that every day thousands of people walk in fear that the bridge will collapse. Also, during the rainy season when the Noyyal River floods, the bridge gets completely submerged. Thus the people in this area have great difficulty in transportation. The bridge has been further damaged by the recent rains.

He said he personally met with the Corporation Commissioner on 04.09.2018, 21.01.2019, 21.02.2019 and 13.08.2019 and urged him to increase the height and width of this bridge, repair the road and take action to allay the fear of the public.

He added that he has written to the Divisional Engineer, Coimbatore Highways on 24.01.2019 and 25.06.2019 regarding the renovation of this bridge, but to date no action has been taken on behalf of the Highways Department

He said "As the bridge connects Pollachi via Vellalore and Kerala, it is used by thousands daily. Therefore a wide overhead bridge should be built by adding a pillar to avoid Noyyal river water flowing in during the floods."

He said on behalf of the DMK party, he appealed to the Coimbatore District Collector to take immediate action.
