Coimbatore: Coconut production in Pollachi has been affected due to continuous rains and trade worth crores of rupees has come to a standstill.

Coconut cultivation is one of the majors in Pollachi and its surroundings. A lot of coconut based industries are also operated. As part of this, more than a hundred copra drying businesses are operating in areas including Negamam Kattampatti and Sultanpet near Pollachi.

The copra produced here is sent to areas including Kangayam where coconut oil is made. Due to heavy rains in Pollachi and Negamam areas for the last few days, there has been a problem with drying the coconuts.

As a result, copra production has been paralyzed for more than 15 days.

A farmer said, "After years of struggling to get a fair price for copra, farmers now get prices ranging from Rs. 93 to Rs. 100 per kg. A field produces about 1 ton of copra per week. Thus, the income was up to 1 lakh rupees a week. Currently, due to continuous rains, copra production has been affected in more than 100 fields in the Pollachi and Negamam, paralyzing business worth crores of rupees and causing losses. As a result, thousands of workers have lost their jobs. The government should relax the restrictions on copra procurement centers."

It is noteworthy that the price of coconut oil is likely to increase as copra production declines.
