Coimbatore: The ongoing model road work at the Racecourse area, as part of the Smart City Project will be completed by December, told the Corporation officials, on Tuesday.

The project was flagged of by Minister for Municipal Administration, SP Velumani on June 12. Estimated at a cost of Rs.40.70 crore, the model road project is part of the Smart City project under which various developmental works are undertaken by the City Corporation.
Under the Smart City project, Rs.998 crores have been allocated for integrated bus stand at Vellalore, model roads, recreational parks, children's parks, playgrounds, LED streetlights, beautification and enhancement of nine lakes under the Corporation including the Kurichi Lake, Ukkadam Periyakulam, Valankulam and Muthannankulam.

As part of the project, the model road at Race Course promises quality roads of uniform width with calculated curves. All the junctions on this road will be remodeled and widened.
Briefing on this, a Corporation official informed that the model road will feature various people-friendly features including an open stadium near the Government Arts College for the recreation of the public.

He added that pathways and walking tracks will be altered to provide safety and ease of walking to pedestrians and fitness enthusiasts.
"At specific spots around the area, provisions will me made to set up small shops. The area ear-marked will have upto 30 shops, with 4 meter wide footpath on the exterior of the road. Similarly, designated parking spots will be set up to ease traffic. Footpaths will be set up, on either sides of the road to make it easy for the public to walk", he noted.
Further, open gyms have been plannedseparately for women and men at two places with synthetic flooring. A children's park with synthetic flooring, fully equipped with play toys is to be set up for entertaining children, he added.

The model road also will provide purified drinking water, toilets and safety rooms, shelters, free telecommunication and sufficient CCTV cameras, eateries at multiple spots across the Race Course area stretch. Further, to provide seamless electricity and telecommunication even during rainy seasons, cables have been embedded underground. We expect the model road to be completed by December and ready for public use", he informed.
