Coimbatore: Corporation Commissioner hosted a consultative meeting to discuss Kurichi Lake rejuvenation under the Smart City project.
He met the engineers and the 'Kulangal Paathukaapu' organisation members and discussed the developmental projects being undertaken at the Kurichi lake.
He said, "Nine lakes under the Corporation area are being rehabilitated and modernised under the Smart city projects. One of the prime motives is the merging of the Kurichi lake, situated in the midst of the Pollachi and Kuniyamuthur roads, with the Noyyal river. The Smart City projects do not just beautify the lakes, they also focus on environmental renovation, rejuvenation and refining the nature of the lakes. Perfecting the front entrance and cleaning the drainage canals are also part of the project."
"The project focuses more on the environmental aspects than modernisation. It has been stipulated in the PWD contracts that the full tank Level should not be reduced", he noted.
The Commissioner added, "The Kurichi lake is the ninth lake to be renovated and rejuvenated under the Smart City Environmental renovation and rejuvenation scheme. The lake area is 334 acres. Once the encroachments on the lake bunds are removed, the banks will be strengthened and a cycling pathway, a pathway for pedestrians, toilets every 500 meters, boat rides, restaurants, yoga and karate training facilities, gyms, themed gardens, floating platforms, bridges, community hall and a separate island to improve the habitat of birds are to be established."
"Due to the urbanisation of the city, the pathways of water channels that come to the lake have been modified. This will be addressed", informed the Commissioner.

Corporation Engineer R. Lakshmanan, Deputy Engineer Bhuvaneshwari and Kurichi Lake Protection Organisation's S.N. Saminathan and other volunteers were present for the meeting.
