Coimbatore: A farm in Pollachi was identified for breeding African Catfish that has been banned by the TN government. The Sub Collector has ordered for the fishes and equipment to be destroyed yesterday.

The Revenue department received information that a farm in Pollachi was breeding the banned African Catfish for sale. This breeding facility functions at a private farm in Chedimuthur near Pollachi where this fish was being grown in small farm ponds.

Following this the Pollachi Sub Collector Vaidhyanathan led a team including Revenue department officials who conducted an inspection at the farm. They discovered the illegally grown African Catfish. The Sub Collector ordered for destroying the fishes that were bred illegally with the help of the health department officials.

Investigations are being conducted by the Revenue department with the owner of the farm. Further legal action has been planned against him.

The African Catfish kills other breeds of fish to survive. This creates a danger for the native breed of fishes as they could be destroyed. Further, these fishes cause health hazards. The TN government had banned the breeding and sale of these fishes.
