Coimbatore: Farmers in Pollachi region have expressed joy after 800 cubic feet of water from Thunakkadavu Dam is being released into Thirumurthy Dam via Contour canal.
Indicating a prosperous harvest, this year, the Western Ghats next to Pollachi has been receiving copious rainfall for the past few weeks. Especially heavy rains along the catchment areas has helped a majority of the reservoirs reach their full capacity.
First among the lot is the Sholaiyar dam of the Parambikulam Azhiyaru Irrigation Project which has reached its full reservoir capacity of 160 feet. Following this, excess water is being released from the Sholayar to Parambikulam dam. As a result, the water level in the 72 feet high Parambikulam Dam has rose to 54 feet.

Due to incessant rains, dams including Parambikulam, Aliyar and Thunakkadavu Dam of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) are filling up fast. Owing to which, the farmers are urging to open the sluices of Thirumurthy dam through the Contour Canal.

Consenting to the request of the farmers, the PWD officials today released 800 cubic feet of water per second from the Thunakkadavu dam through the Contour canal, near Sarkarpathy.
The Sarkarpathi Power Station has been generating 18 MW of electricity since yesterday with water released from the Thunakkadavu Dam.
