Farmers start first season paddy cultivation in Anamalai near Pollachi

Coimbatore: Farmers at Anamalai and its surrounding areas have started planting paddy crops for the first season.

Coimbatore: Farmers at Anamalai and its surrounding areas have started planting paddy crops for the first season.

Farmers who are exhilarated by the plentiful rains that have showered during this monsoon season are busy with the planting of paddy crops.

Around 6,400 acres of land in the Anamalai regions receive water for agriculture through the Old Aayakattu Canal from Aliyar Dam near Pollachi. Of this 3,400 acres of land cultivate coconut and other rainfed crops. The other 3,000 acres are involved in the cultivation of rice, two seasons a year. Rice plantation happens mostly in the areas of Anamalai, Ramana Mudali Pudur and Kottur.

The southwest monsoon this year has led to the release of water from the Aliyar Dam in July.

For the past few days, farmers who had ploughed the paddy fields and kept the crops ready for planting, have started to sow paddy in Anamalai and its surrounding areas.

The farmers expect to harvest the first-season crops in November and begin the second season cultivation thereafter.
