Coimbatore: Tribals near Pollachi requested the government to build houses for them. More than 40 tribal families are living in the Sarkarpathy forest area in the Pollachi Forest Division under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. Heavy rains last year caused a boulder to displace causing floods that washed away houses of the tribals.
The Forest and Revenue Department rescued Sundari, a 2-year-old tribal girl, 15 days after she was swept away by floodwaters at midnight. Affected hill people were housed in Electricity Board flats, Rs 4 lakh was provided to the child's family by the Tamil Nadu government through Minister SP Velumani and Deputy Speaker Jayaraman and Valparai legislator Kasthuri Vasu. Funds were provided from the MLA fund.
Government officials promised the tribals earlier that houses would be built for them, but this has not happened so far. Under the circumstances, the people here are afraid to stay at home as it has been raining heavily in the Western Ghats again. Therefore, they have requested the Forest department and the Revenue department to build houses for them.
