Coimbatore: One of the members of the 'half trouser' gang of thieves that roam around in the nights with dangerous weapons was arrested today by the Singanallur police.

The movement of sandalwood smugglers has been spotted in various areas of Coimbatore since the end of the last year. Video footage of these gang members roaming on the streets with dangerous weapons within the Singanallur police limits were also released.
Following this, the Coimbatore police arrested a few people in connection with this. However, a few months after their arrest many videos of men with dangerous weapons roaming in the Singanallur area began to do the rounds again.
For the past few months. men with oiled bodies, armed with dangerous weapons have been roaming around in the Singanallur and Sulur police limits.
The thieves have been emboldened enough to break into houses to loot even when the people in the house were present. This has scared the people.
Following this, the Coimbatore Corporation Police Commissioner Sumith Sharan ordered for a special team to be formed under the Singanallur Police Inspector Muneeshwaran consisting of Sub Inspector Arjun, Bhaskaran and constables Riyaz and Durga Raj. This team has been undertaking night patrol.
When on patrol, the team came across a suspicious looking person at the SIHS Colony. When enquired, the person gave conflicting replies. Following this, the cops took him to the police station and conducted an enquiry. It was revealed that the man was one of the gang members of the group of 'half trouser' thieves who wore masks and looted houses in the night.
The man has been identified as Veeramani and has three burglary cases pending. The police are conducting an enquiry regarding the other thieves in the gang.
