Coimbatore: There is a fear of floods in Navamalai due to heavy rains in the catchment areas under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve next to Pollachi.

It has been raining heavily for the last two days in the areas under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve next to Pollachi. Thousands of people including EB workers live in more than 10 areas, including Sarkarpathy, Koomati and Navamalai, where excess water from the Upper Aliyar Dam has been released due to heavy rains.

Due to the floods caused by the rains, the ground-level bridge leading to Navamalai has been flooded and people are unable to leave and in the face of the spread of the coronavirus infection, people here are finding it difficult to work. At present, the general public pay Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 for a rental vehicle to go to the nearby Kottur area to buy essentials. The residents here say that the only solution is to raise the bridge. Tribals fear that if the rains continue, life will be severely affected. Last year, rains disrupted traffic for more than 15 days.
