AICCTU petitions Corporation Commissioner for Coimbatore's sanitation workers

Coimbatore: The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) has petitioned the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner regarding various demands of the sanitation staff working in the Coimbatore Corporation.

Coimbatore: The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) has petitioned the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner regarding various demands of the sanitation staff working in the Coimbatore Corporation.



The AICCTU held agitations today (August 6, 2020), all over the country, to demand  various needs of the sanitation staff.

As a part of these agitations, the demands of the contract sanitation workers of the Coimbatore Corporation were presented as petitions to the government, press and the Coimbatore District Collector. Since there has been no action on the demands, through the agitations held today, they requested action on the demands.



The following are the demands:

1. Those workers who have been working for more than 15 years should be provided with a minimum salary of Rs.17,000 as per the TN governments GO of 2017. Pending funds must be paid from 2017.

2. The payment of special salary for the COVID-19 period must be calculated for the full salary, from March to July. Sanitation workers must be provided with protective equipment, to protect themselves from COVID-19 infection, as per the orders of the High Court, Madurai branch.

3. Contract Sanitation workers must be made permanent, immediately. As per the orders of the Supreme court equal pay must be provided for jobs.

4. Provide the sanitation workers with houses within Coimbatore City.

5. Implement the previous work timing considering the welfare of the workers.

6. Accident insurance for Rs.50 lakhs for sanitation workers of the Corporation, Municipality, Town Panchayat and Panchayt must be paid by the TN government. Medical insurance must be provided for the sanitation workers.

They have requested the Government to look into this urgently and facilitate the sanitation workers wellbeing who have been at the forefront of this fight against COVID-19.
