Then he made a surprise visit to the hospital's nursing department. He then inquired about the medical procedures being carried out there.

He later told reporters that COVID patients from 3 districts have been treated by the ESI Hospital since March 23. He said while mucus samples were taken from 5,550 people for testing, and 3,023 were admitted as inpatients.
He said that the severity of the disease could be ascertained through the newly launched CT scan and as it was essential it was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following which he took the necessary action. The CT scan device can test up to 100 people a day and hence victims could be treated quickly.
He informed that 96 expectant mothers have been treated for coronavirus in the maternity ward of Coimbatore ESI Hospital. Of these, 25 mothers gave birth by caesarean section. Tests on these children confirmed that they were not infected. So far, 19 mothers have reported complete recovery with the baby and are back home.
He noted that 8 more pregnant women with the disease are being treated, 892 children have been admitted to the pediatric ward and 666 children have fully recovered and returned home. He said 26 children with the disease are still receiving treatment.
Out of total capacity of 450 beds in the ESI Hospital 240 beds have oxygen facilities and now it has been increased to 340 and a renovated separate ward with 60 beds has been started, he informed. He said the death rate in Coimbatore district is only 1.58 per cent.
The Minister then attended a consultative meeting on coronavirus infection prevention measures at the District Collector’s Office. District Revenue Officer Ramadurai Murugan, West zone IG Regional Police Chief Periaiah, Corporation Commissioner Shravan Kumar, Commissioner of Police Sumit Sharan and officials were present.
