Coimbatore: Monsoon rains have brought about plentiful rainfall to the district but have also caused rivers and canals to flood. Farmers have therefore requested for dredging undertaken in these water bodies.
The Southwest monsoons have caused the lakes and ponds to fill up and the Noyyal river to flood. However, since untreated sewage and industrial waste mix with the water, the river appears frothy.
People of Rasipalayam and Arugampalayam of the Sulur Panchayat Union allege that nearly 400 acres of agricultural lands are facing the danger of being affected since the branch canals of the Noyyal have not been dredged for years. The check dam near Masaniamman temple in Muthugoundenpudur is where the branch canal begins.
It runs through Rasipalayam and Arugampalayam and meets with the Noyyal again. The pathway of the water has not been cleared formany years causing an overgrowth of bushes in the area, informed the public.
Speaking to us a farmer from the area said, "Two months ago, the pathway of the canal was blocked for the construction of a bridge. It was announced by PWD that the canal will be set right when the bridge work is done. However, nothing has happened so far. River water mixed with sewage makes it appear like a stagnant body of water.
We have raised this issue with the Panchayat President too. The President has petitioned the PWD. The PWD have, however, said that they lack sufficient funds to undertake the necessary work. The rain water that we manage to save during the rainy season is vital for use in the other seasons. All through the year, the Noyyal water appears to be unusable. It is only now the water has begun to flow."
He further suggested, "If the canal is dredged and cleared from Rasipalayam to Pillayar temple, the shutter is fixedand the mud mounds are cleared, 400 acres of farming lands will benefit."
