Copious rainfall across catchments areas in Coimbatore District; dams reach full capacity

Coimbatore: Farmers in the district are overjoyed as the southwest monsoon has picked pace, especially across all catchment areas of Pillur, Siruvani and Sholayar. The dams are expected to reach their full reservoir capacity, shortly, say official sources.

Siruvani Dam

The Siruvani Dam can hold 22.47 sq km of water. The dam is 49.53 feet high and 878.5 meters above sea level with a water capacity of 650 million cubic feet. The water level on August 6 was measured at 28.44 against the full reservoir capacity of 49.53 feet.

Pillur Dam

For the third consecutibe day in a row,  water has been released from Pillur dam, as rains continue to lash the catchment areas of the Nilgiris. A flood alert has been issued to the people living along the Bhavani river. The Pillur Dam near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district reached 97 feet yesterday which is 3 feet lesser than its full capacity of 100 feet.

Sholayar Dam

With incessant rains lashing the Valparai region, inflow to Sholayar dam has increased to 6832.41 cft. The water level as on August 6 is 139.45 feet against its full capacity of 165 feet.

The sluice gates of the reservoir were opened to let out surplus water. The outflow is measured at 1439.82 cft, as on Thursday.

Chinnakallar Dam

Inflow - 3467.00 cft

River outflow - 527.00 cft

Total outflow - 3461.00 cft

Nirar Dam

Inflow - 1397.00 cft

Tunnel - 1171.53 cft

River outflow - Nil

Total outflow - 1171.53 cft

Valparai - 70 mm

Chinnakallar - 107 mm
