Ravi (52), an estate worker of the Kakkanji Nagar near Kokkal was grievously injured after a tree collapsed on him, yesterday morning. He was rushed to the Ooty GH, but succumbed to injuries.
In another tragedy, Sadiq Ali (42), a resident of the R.C. Colony, Fingerpost, was injured and was killed when a tree fell on him. The Ooty police have registered a case and are investigating.
Several trees have reportedly uprooted in Pudhumandhu, Thomas Church, Mulligorai, Boat House, State Bank and Edakkadu area, causing a traffic chaos.
A team of fire fighters led by Ravikumar are working round-the-clock to remove the tree debris and clear the traffic blocks. During clearing the debris of an uprooted tree in Edakkadu area, one policeman and two firefighters were injured.
40 members of the National disaster and rescue force from Arakkonam arrived this morning to the Nilgiris and engaged in rescue operations at Kundah, Avalanche and Gudalur. Similarly, the Nilgiris anti-naxal unit has also been pressed into service.
Ramasamy, a farmer residing at the Thottamoola area within the Gudalur Municipality has reportedly lost over 1,000 Nendran trees to strong winds.
Rainfall was recorded at 390 mm in Avalanche, 306 mm in Upper Bhavani, 161 mm in Pandhalur and 145 mm in Emerald.
The Nilgiris District Collector has announced that, "Due to the heavy winds and incessant rains in the Nilgiris district and the risk of trees being uprooted on the Gudalur National Highway, traffic will be halted from 7 PM today (August 5, 2020) to 6 AM on August 6, 2020, as a precautionary measure."
