Coimbatore: Water rises by 11 feet in Sholayar Dam in Valparai in a single day. The Sholayar Dam is the source for the Parambikulam Aliyar project in Valparai. The water collected at the Nirar Dam adjacent to the Akkamalai is brought to the Sholayar Dam by a mining canal.

From here it goes to Parambikulam Dam after power generation at two power stations and from there to Pollachi, Udumalaipettai, Dharapuram, Palladam and Karur via Aliyar and Thirumoorthy Dam and is used for drinking water supply and agricultural purposes.

The Valparai area has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days. Due to this, the Nadumalai river, Puthuthottam river and Koozhangal river are flooded. The 165-foot-high Solaiyar Dam rose by 11 feet and reached 129 feet this morning from 118 yesterday.

Rains to the tune of 82 mm in Valparai, 155 mm in Chinnakallar, 100 mm at Nirar Dam and 130 mm at Sholayar Dam were recorded. Due to the continuous rains, the dam will soon reach its full capacity of 165 feet, the Public Works Department said.
