Water released from Pillur Dam for the second day: Flood Alert issued along Bhavani river
Coimbatore: Water has been released from Pillur Dam for the second day in a row today as rains continue to lash the catchment areas of Nilgiris. Flood Alert has been issued along Bhavani river. Due to the southwest monsoon rains over the past one week, the Pillur Dam near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district has reached 97 feet yesterday which is 3 feet lesser than its full capacity of 100 feet.
The Bhavani River was flooded yesterday as up to 22,000 cubic meters of water was discharged and a flood alert was issued on behalf of the district administration to keep the people living along the coast safe.
As a result, the water level dropped to 12,000 cubic feet last evening and again at night it started raining heavily in all the catchment areas of Avalanche, Upper Bhavani, Attappadi, etc. As a result, the water supply to the Pillur Dam rose to 17,000 cubic feet from night thus they are discharging an additional 17,000 cubic feet of water per second.
The district administration has issued a second flood alert to the people living along the Bhavani river for the second day in a row. The district administration has advised not to bathe, wash clothes or fish in the river. The current water level of the dam is 97 feet
The supply is 17,000 cubic feet and it is being discharged as surplus.
