Coimbatore: The Pillur dam is nearing its full capacity due to the monsoon rains. 22,000 cubic feet of water per second is being released now. People living close to the banks have been issued a flood alert.

The Pillur dam near Mettupalayam, Coimbatore has witnessed an increased inflow of water due to the South west monsoon rains. The water inflow has gone up to 10,000 cubic feet of water per second. The dam is expected to be filled to full capacity soon.

The Kerala forests and the water catchment areas of the Pillur dam, such as Attapadi, Gudalur and Pandhalur in the Nilgiris district have been receiving good Southwest monsoon rains. Hence the water inflow to the Pillur dam has increased from 1,000 cubic feet to 22,000 cubic feet.

Since the water flow continues to rise, 22,000 cubic feet of water is being released into the Bhavani river. Water level in the dam has risen to 97 feet, with the entire capacity of the dam being 100 feet.

Considering the safety of the dam, water is being released through four sluice gates. Hence a flood alert has been issued to the people living on the banks of the Bhavani river. The District administration has alerted the people living in the low lying areas of the river bank to move to higher areas.
