Coimbatore: Buses in the Coimbatore Division have been undergoing maintenance at an intense pace. Officials informed that when the public transport service resumes, the division is ready to operate 1,019 buses.
The TNSTC buses stopped operations on March 24, following the lockdown that was implemented due to COVID-19. When the lockdown was relaxed and the buses services resumed within the zones in June, 50% of buses were operated in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris and Erode.
However, in July the public bus services were stopped again. Now the lockdown has been extended until August 31. Public transport has been halted until further notice by the State government.
Under the circumstances, TNSTC Coimbatore is all set to operate 1,019 buses from the Coimbatore division, in the first phase, when the bus service resumes post the lockdown relaxation.
Speaking regarding this, an official of the Coimbatore Government Transport Corporation said, "Maintenance of buses is being undertaken at an intense pace at the workshops in the Coimbatore Division. When government buses are permitted to operate, the Coimbatore division has planned to operate 1,019 buses, just as it was done in June. Depending on the passenger turnout, the number of buses will be increased."
