There are more than 65,000 farming families in the Nilgiris district dependent on the tea business. The price for the green tea leaves produced by them is determined by the South Indian Tea board and is announced in the first week of every month.
A press release by the Tea Board stated, "The minimum price of green tea leaves grown in the Nilgiris will be determined based on the basis of the auction price of the month of July. As per this the minimum purchase price for green tea leaves for the month of August has been fixed at Rs.20.99. The official team ensures that farmers are being paid the assured minimum price. Action will be taken against those factories that do not pay this price to the farmers", noted the release.
The July price for green tea leaves was Rs.14.38. The price for August has increased by Rs.6.61 and the minimum price has been determined as Rs.20.99. This price announced by the Tea Board has brought relief to the farmers.
