Coimbatore: A petition was filed with the District Superintendent of Police to take action against those spreading false information regarding the self financing engineering colleges.
A news claiming that 89 substandard engineering colleges are in Tamil Nadu out of which 10 are in Coimbatore and students and parents should avoid them during engineering counselling has been doing rounds in social media spaces. The Federation of Self-Financing Engineering Colleges has been filing complaints all over Tamil Nadu against this rumour.

As part of this, a petition was submitted to the District Superintendent, Coimbatore. Talking to the press, Anusha Ravi, Chief Executive Officer of Park Engineering Colleges, said, "This matter has been spread since last year and it is just a rumour. Anna University dismissed these allegations as baseless has also issued a clarification.
When Std 12 results came out last year, this rumour was spread in social media and some people are spreading the same this year around too."
She added that a complaint has been lodged with the District Superintendent of Coimbatore urging action against those who were involved in spreading such information through cyberspace and that it was a criminal offence.
Even forwarding such information is a crime, she noted, and said that the SP has assured that the matter would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken.
