Coimbatore: Persons trying to smuggle elephant elephant tusks on two wheelers have been arrested.
Based on a tip-off that elephant tusks are being smuggled from the T.N. Palayam Forest limits in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, vehicular checks and patrols were undertaken by the police on the Sakthi-Athani road for the past one week.
Under the circumstances, the special team conducting vehicle checks, found two men smuggling a pair of elephant tusks on a two wheeler around 10 PM yesterday. Interrogation revealed that two more people are involved in the crime. However, in a shocking revelation they said that the tusks were taken from a dead elephant that was lying near Anthiyur.
