Gusts pick speed as peak of the windy season arrives: TN windmills generate 50 million units of electricity every day

Coimbatore: Peak wind season is going on across the state, which helps windmills generate an average of 50 million units of electricity everyday.

Wind power which comes under the renewable energy sector plays a vital role in fulfilling the increasing electricity demands. The total installed capacity across the nation is 37,000 megawatts out of which TN contributes a whooping 9,300 megawatts. There are more than 18,000 windmills sprawled across the state.

The period between the end of May and September is normally considered as the windy season. This year around, the season started at the usual time and is at its peak now.

President of Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA) K. Kasthurirangaiyan spoke to SimpliCity and said," This year the wind season started on May 20. Usually the Aadi month during which time the winds will pick speed month is considered to be the peak season. At present, the wind speed is more and it is helping all the windmills established across the state to generate an average of 50 million units of electricity each day. We can expect more in the days to come.

In the past, we have even witnessed 100 million units of electricity generated on a particular day during the peak wind season. We expect to generate more this month. Last year totally 10,000 megawatts of electricity was generated during the entire wind season. We expect to generate more this month and the months to come as well."
