Coimbatore: The CPI and the CPI (M) have demanded stern action against those political outfits who drew the 'Vel' on the streets for their political mileage. They lodged a complaint to that effect at the Coimbatore City Commissioner's office.

The complaint, filed by the CPIM District Secretary V. Ramamoorthy, CPI District Treasurer Subramaniam and U.K. Sivagnanam to the Coimbatore District Central Deputy Commissioner Karthikeyan read, "The popular devotional song on Lord Muruga, the Kanda Shasti Kavasam was defamed on social media by miscreants and the district council of both the parties strongly condemn this. Lord Muruga is the most popular deity of the Tamil people and his symbol, the 'Vel' was drawn on the streets and chants hailing his name were written on the streets in a cheap political gesture. Belittling names of gods for political mileage and in a manner of disrupting religious harmonyby some outfits has created fear and disgust among the people of Coimbatore. The Police department must monitor such activities and initiate iron-hand action against such people."

The complaint also stated, "The 'Vel' drawn on the ground was trodden on by people and ridden over by vehicles, but this fact did not stop the outfits from drawing the symbol on the road. This is an act of shaming the symbol and highly condemnable. Hence on behalf of the Coimbatore District councils of CPI and CPI(M), we insist that action must be initiated against the people and the outfits that were involved in this act with no lenience shown."
