Coimbatore: Upon orders from the City Police Commissioner, Sumit Sharan, National Security Act (NSA) has been slapped on Arun Krishnan (21) who belongs to the Bharat Sena outfit and has reportedly surrendered to the police in connection with desecration of Periyar Statue in Sundarapuram here, last Thursday.
Tension gripped the city after the statue of Periyar was desecrated by pouring saffron colour on it. Protests were held across the city from Periyaists and DMK who condemned the act vehemently and demanded legal action against the culprit.
Arun Krishnan (21) belonging to Bharat Sena surrendered himself on the same day at Podanur Police station. Cases were file on him at Kuniyamuthur Police Station under Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Meanwhile, the City Police Commissioner has ordered to book him under NSA on Arun Krishnan who presently is lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
National Security Act
The National Security Act (NSA) is an act that empowers the government to detain a person if the authorities are satisfied that he/she is a threat to national security or to prevent him/her from disrupting public order.
A person detained under the NSA can be held for ten days without being told the charges against him/her.
