Coimbatore:The monsoon rains in the catchment areas of the Siruvani dam have led to the increase of the water level in the dam. The water level in the Siruvani dam is currently 12.86 feet.
36 wards in the Coimbatore Corporation and hundreds of villages on the way are provided with the drinking water from the Siruvani dam. The Siruvani dam can store water over an area of 22.47 square kms. The dam is 49.53 feet tall and is 878.5 meters above sea level. The water holding capacity of the dam is 650 million cubic feet.
Earlier, the water level in the dam went down to less than three feet due to the shortage of rains in June. This created a fear of drinking water scarcity. However, since the monsoon rainshave been pouring heavily in the catchment areas of the dam, the water level in the dam has risen to 12.86 feet.
Speaking about this a Corporation official said, "64 MLT water was taken from the Siruvani dam yesterday on behalf of the Corporation for the supply of drinking water."
