Coimbatore: Information about workers who arrived into the district without E-passes is gathered by the District Administration. The District Collector issued a warning to the industries regarding this.

Coimbatore, known as the Manchester of South India, is home to nearly 1.5 lakh factories, foundries and MSMEs. These industries employ workers from the Northern states of Odisha, Bihar, UP and Jharkhand. More than one lakh workers are employed in these factories. Due to the spread of COVID-19, more than 50,000 migrant workers returned to their own states.

However, when the factories and foundries were permitted to reopen in the last month the shortage of labourers led to many of the factories not being able to commence production. Hence the industries were keen to bring back labourers from other states. Since there are a lot of restrictions in bringing the migrant workers, most of the industries could not bring them back. However, a few workers manage to obtain E-passes to Kerala and sneak into Coimbatore district.

The District Collector issued a warning to all the industries regarding bringing workers for employment without proper E-passes and said that stern action would be taken against industries that practise this. Following this, the Industrial department officials are now in the process of collecting data about workers who entered the district without E-passes.

Speaking about this, a district administrative officer said, "Due to the arrival of North Indian workers without E-passes, the risk of spread of COVID-19 in the district has increased. Hence the officials are actively involved in collecting the details of workers who came into the district without an E-pass."
