Coimbatore: During the wee hours of Tuesday, some people have erected a 15-feet-tall 'Vel' to an electric pole in Nanjundapuram area and wrote 'Vetrivel Veeravel' on the road.

The incident is part of the ongoing issue in Tamilnadu after a YouTube channel named Karuppar Koottam created communal animosity by posting a defamatory video about Lord Murugan and a song sung in praise of him -- Kanda Sashti Kavasam.
Following the incident, arrests have been made on both left and right wing supporters for sparking communal tension.
On Monday, the Chennai City Police Commissioner slapped Goondas act on Surendra Natarajan, anchor of the YouTube channel and SJ Gopal, coordinator of the Hindu Tamil Peravai, for posting derogatory video on Islam.
In a similar incident, the Coimbatore police on Sunday booked around 10 Hindu outfit supporters and arrested five of them and booked them under Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act and various sections of IPC for allegedly drawing ‘Vel’ on roads.
Adding to the controversy, unknown people have reportedly erected Vel in Nanjundapuram area here and also drew Vel images with slogans on the road.

The passers-by were left disturbed, as many vehicles and pedestrians had to trample the holy spear of Lord Muruga which has drawn on the road. While some people even lit up camphor and worshipped the vel tied along with the electric pole.
Similar issues of drawing Vel on roads have been reported at various places including Ukkadam, Kuniyamuthur and Ramanathapuram, on Tuesday.
It may be recalled that on Monday, a state functionary of Vishva Hindu Parishad, Amarnath Sivalingam, tried to self immolate himself in front of Kuniyamuthur Police station condemning the arrest of ring-wing supporters who were arrested in connection with drawing Vel on roads.
