Smoke from expired medicines set on fire by the staff at Kolakombai Primary Health Center Monday poses the risk pollution in the surrounding areas.

The Nilgiris: Smoke from expired medicines set on fire by the staff at Kolakombai Primary Health Center Monday poses the risk of pollution in the surrounding areas.

Medical waste and expired medicines from Kolakkambai were burnt near the premises causing the risk of pollution in the area. Normally, medicines for PHC's are sourced depending on the number of people in the neighbourhood. When the sourced medicines expire, protocol demands that they be given away to a waste disposal firm to be destroyed or should be buried.

The Kolakkambai PHC, however, did not follow either of the methods and decided to burn them. This has caused a risk of pollution in the neighbourhood. It is the request of social activists and the public that authorities should ensure that such incidents be avoided in the future.

District Deputy Director of Health Balusamy promised an inquiry into the incident and appropriate action.
