Coimbatore: Police are investigating 5 persons for drawing "vel" on the roads in Kuniyamuthur area of Coimbatore yesterday.
It is to be noted that Hindu organizations have been staging various protests against the Karuppar Kootam YouTube channel for posting a video insulting the Kanda Sashti Kavasam and Lord Muruga. Under the circumstances, Akshay Varma, Gurubaran, Santhosh, Arunkumar and Sivaganesh from BK Pudur Parvathipuram area were arrested by the Kuniyamuthur police for painting figures of "vel" on the roads yesterday.
Condemning this, members of the pro-Hindu outfit besieged the Kuniyamuthur police station, causing a stir. They sat in front of the station and sang Bhajan songs in protest.
Amarnath Sivalingam, the state joint secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, tried to set himself ablaze. There was commotion when police tried to stop him.
Following this, the police, led by Southern Assistant Commissioner Cedric Manuel, are conducting negotiations with the key representatives of the Hindu organization. Security has been tightened at the Kuniyamuthur police station.
