Coimbatore: The 37-hour lockdown enforced in Coimbatore made people rush to TASMAC outlets and meat stalls.

The increase of the number of COVID-19 cases in Coimbatore prompted the District Administration to enforce a 37-hour lockdown without exceptions. While the state government had announced a lockdown without exceptions on all the Sundays in July, the Coimbatore district administration announced an extended lockdown for 37 hours from 5 PM today to 6 AM on Monday.

Prior to the lockdown, the rush was more at liquor and meat stores. Many places threw social distancing to the wind.

Due to the lockdown motorists rushed to reach their destinations on time, causing heavy traffic snarls on major roads such as Trichy Road, Puliakulam Road, Sathy Road and Avinashi Road.

Most of the shops shuttered down before the stipulated time. A few stores that remained open until the last minute were insisted to be shut down by the police over PA systems. The police also warned that people who roam around without essential reasons will be acted upon strictly.

While the lockdown permits the sale of essentials such as milk and medicines, other businesses like shandies, grocery stores, meat stalls, liquor shops, vegetable shops and industries have been banned from functioning.
