Coimbatore: The Southwest monsoon rains pouring in the Siruvani catchment areas have increased the water level at the Siruvani Dam to 12.69 feet.
36 wards in the Coimbatore Corporation and hundreds of villages on the Siruvani waterway are provided with drinking water from the Siruvani dam. The Siruvani dam can store water over an area of 22.47 square kms and is 49.53 feet tall and 878.5 meters above sea level. The water holding capacity of the dam is 650 million cubic feet.
The water level in the dam went down below three feet due to the shortage of rain in June. This created the possibility of drinking water scarcity. However, since the monsoon rains have been pouring heavily in the catchment areas of the dam the water level at the dam has risen to 12.69 feet.
20 mm of rainfall was registered in the catchment areas yesterday. Rains are expected in the coming days too. Hence it is expected that the water level in the dam will continue to increase in the coming days.
Speaking about this, a Corporation official said, "60 MLT water is taken by the Corporation on a daily basis for the supply of drinking water. Under the current situation, there would not be a shortage until the month of December."
