COVID-19: A new high in Tamil Nadu: 7,758 recoveries, 6,988 new cases and 89 fatalities

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu on Friday recorded a fresh single-day high of 6,988 cases of the novel coronavirus infection, pushing the State's tally to 2,06,737. TN now has 52,273 active cases while 1,51,055 have recovered and 3409 died.

Chennai reported 1329 cases today. The State Capital now has a total of 93, 537 COVID cases.

Meanwhile, with 89 fatalities over the last 24 hours, the State toll rose to 3409.

In some good news, recovered cases increased to 1,51,055 with a whopping 7,758 patients being discharged from Tamil Nadu hospitals since Friday evening.

Elsewhere in the State, 449 cases were reported in Chengalpattu, 442 in Kancheepuram, 385 in Thiruvallur, 4 in Ariyalur, 270 in Coimbatore, 89 in Cuddalore, 30 in Dharmapuri, 100 in Dindigul, 22 in Erode, 104 in Kallakurichi, 269 in Kanyakumari, 27 in Karur, 31 in Krishnagiri, 301 in Madurai, 10 in Nagapattinam, 51 in Namakkal, 40 in Nilgiris, 25 in Perambalur, 110 in Pudukkottai, 86 in Ramanathapuram, 244 in Ranipet, 112 in Salem, 84 in Sivagangai, 99 in Tenkasi, 162 in Thanjavur, 236 in Theni, 86 in Thirupathur, 385in Thiruvannamalai, 100 in Thiruvarur, 317 in Thoothukudi, 212 in Tirunelveli, 51 in Tirupur, 199 in Trichy, 212 in Vellore, 157 in Villupuram, and 376 in Virudhunagar districts.

With as many as 22,87,334 samples tested so far, Tamil Nadu's tests per million is 24,262, more than twice the national figure of 10,421. With 1,02,107 tests under its belt, Coimbatore has surpassed the Tamil Nadu figure on this front at 25,068 tests per million and has a positivity rate of only 2.31%. Experts have pointed out that positivity of 5% or less indicates that the spread of the disease is well under control.
