Coimbatore: MLA N. Karthik has issued a statement regarding the collection of charges for waste management from apartment dwellers within the Coimbatore Corporation.
He said, "In the current economic state, it is a challenge for many people to own a private land and construct a house on it. Hence the middle and lower income groups opt to live in apartments. In Coimbatore alone there are more than four lakh people who dwell in apartments. They cannot live in private houses and hence live in apartments. However, the Coimbatore Corporation is under the idea that apartment dwellers are well to do and try to impose all kinds of charges on them. Even the taxes are higher."
He added, "The people who dwell in apartments are mostly ordinary people. The garbage that is collected from them also belongs to the common household category. However, the local body administration considers this as waste from commercial complexes and has stopped collecting garbage from apartments for the past few months. Further, apartments are being forced to take upwaste management with private parties at a cost of Rs.60 to Rs.70 per house."
"There are nearly 40,000 apartment flats within the Coimbatore Corporation. Nearly Rs.28 lakhs is being collected in a month and Rs. 3 crore 36 lakhs is being collected in a year for waste management by private companies. Taking the advice of the local administration, the apartments segregate the waste and are ready to continue to do so. How is it right for the Corporation to refuse collecting garbage from these places?", he questioned.
He also noted that the apartments also pay all the taxes stipulated by the government and said that apartment residents must also be considered as regular household dwellers and the Corporation must collect the garbage from the apartments. He insisted that the Coimbatore Corporation Administration must take necessary action about this issue.
