Bear movement has increased in various areas of the Nilgiris including Coonoor, Kolakambai and Kotagiri. It has become common for bears to be spotted in the residential and tea estate areas, sometimes along with the bear cubs. This has left the public frightened and hesitant to venture out.
Bears have been spotted as recently as this evening. A bear was spotted in a residential area on the road from Selas to Kundah. On hearing people screaming, the bear moved swiftly and crossed the road.
People in the vicinity captured the bear's movements on their cellphones. The public have requested the forest department to capture the bear and let it into dense forests before any untoward incident occurs.
