Coimbatore: In a shocking incident, the residents of Uppuliyar Thittu Street near Kuruchi have complained that expired ORS Sachets were distributed at the special Covid-19 medical camp conducted in the area. The residents are worried whether it could turn detrimental to the children and elders who consumed the contents of the packets.
Coimbatore City Corporation has been conducting special Covid Medical camps across all wards in the city. In one such camp held on July 23 at Ward No 94 at Uppuliyar Thittu Street of Madukkarai circle of Sundapauram post, the residents have alleged that expired ORS sachets were distributed.
A resident of the street, upon the condition of anonymity, told that the ORS sachets clearly state the manufacturing date as November, 2017 and expiry as18 months from the date of manufacturing. In that case, the product has expired last year, itself.
"Luckily, when I checked the dates, I found the details and was left in shock. When I spoke to my neighbours and several others from the nearby locale where the camp was held, on July 23, I found they also had the same issue," he told.
"What if somebody consumes this and gets affected, especially the elderly and children? I wonder whether our area is the lone case or were they distributed in other areas too", another woman from the same locale lamented.

Along with the ORS sachets, multi-vitamin tablets were also provided. Distribution of expired products during such a time is absolute medical and administrational negligence, allege the residents.

When cross-checked with other wards where Covid camps were held, such ORS packets were not provided, but only multi-vitamin tablets were distributed.
Seconding it, another resident informed that when complained he came to know that such sachets have not been distributed in other camps. Wonder, how it landed up in our camp? he questioned.
A majority of the residents of Ward No: 94 have discarded these expired products, while a few have consumed it and are clueless if it would cause some health issue.
