Coimbatore: Shanmuganathan, a third year law student from Annur near Coimbatore, was arrested by the police under three sections following a complaint by a pro-Hindu outfits that he had slandered Prime Minister Modi and Hinduism.
On the other hand BJP member Nanda, who is on Facebook under the name "Hair Lines Nanda", posted a defamatory post about Periyar last Tuesday. Hence they staged a sit-in protest at the police station demanding registration of a case against Nanda under the same sections as for Shanmuganathan.
Following this, the Annur police registered a case against Nanda under the same 3 sections. This being the case, Nanda has not yet been arrested. TPDK cadres decided to hold a protest at the District Superintendent of Police's office demanding Nanda's arrest.
The TPDK then announced that it would be conducting a sit-in at the Superintendent of Police's office. Following this security was tightened. More than 50 people who marched towards the Superintendent of Police's office this morning were detained in front of the BSNL office. They then raised slogans against the police.
Following this, Deputy Superintendent of Police Anita arrived at the scene, received a complaint from the protesters and assured them that appropriate action would be taken. TPDK cadres said police are showing partiality in dealing with cases. They pointed out that Nanda is moving freely with no action against him. Police assured the matter will be investigated. The protestors dispersed after negotiations.
