Coimbatore: The residents of Murugan Nagar and Sriram Nagar areas are affected by rice weevils that are produced in FCI godowns nearby alleged MLA N. Karthik in his letter to the District Collector.

The MLA wrote, "The Central Government's grain storage godowns in the Peelamedu and Gandhimanagar areas are in use for a long time. The stock of grains kept in these godowns have been kept for a long time causing rice weevils to grow on them.

These insects then get out from the godowns and enter into the residential areas in the vicinity and cause a great deal of hardship to the public. The areas of Murugan Nagar and Sriram Nagar near the godowns are put into a lot of difficulty due to this.

The rice weevils fly into the residential areas and the bites of these insects cause a lot of health issues to the children and adults of the locality. People have been losing their sleep due to the insects.

These insects are found everywhere including grocery stores, bakeries and even in the drinking water kept there. Even households cannot protect their food items from these pests. They are a hazard to the environment and health of the people."

He suggested that proper sanitary and safety measures must be undertaken to prevent these insects from getting out of the godowns. He added that in spite of repeated requests to the godown officials and the Corporation authorities, in person and through letters, no action has been taken regarding this, yet.

Hence he urged the District Collector to take proper action to control the pest infestation with the help of modern techniques.
