Coimbatore: The monsoon rains that have been pouring in various parts of the district accompanied by heavy winds have caused a lot of damage to plantain trees in various places.

Mettupalayam and the surrounding areas of Karamadai, in Coimbatore have been receiving monsoon rains regularly. For the past one week, these areas have been receiving continuous rains. However, heavy winds that accompanied the rains yesterday caused a lot of damage to the plantain trees in the areas of Pungampalayam in the Marudhur panchayat and Marudhur villages. More than 3,000 plantain trees were destroyed in the rains.

Subbarayan of the Pungampalayam area has a plantain farm on an area of four and a half acres. Heavy winds and hailstone rains that poured yesterday uprooted 2,000 trees in his farm alone. Plantain trees that were fully grown and ready to yield fruits were destroyed entirely.

Farmers say each tree has been cared for at a cost of Rs.120 and the destruction of these trees overnight has caused a loss of lakhs of rupees. This has distressed the farmers greatly.
