Right from the beginning of 2019, Coimbatore has witnessed a slew of sandalwood smuggling incidents.The areas under the limits of Kattoor, Saibaba Colony,Race Course, Kuniyamuthur, and R.S. Puram Police Stations were all hit by the sandalwood smugglers. Finally, the video footage of these smugglers were captured in the Singanallur police limits. The video revealed them walking through the streets with dangerous weapons.
Following this, under the orders of the Police Commissioner Sumith Sharan, a special team was formed to arrest the smugglers. On December 17 last year the police received secret information about a planned sandalwood smuggling to be conducted in the Saibaba Colony area. Following this, Govindaraj, Vishnu and Anbu were arrested for smuggling sandalwood in the Singanallur area. Police were on the lookout for the other criminals.
In an unexpected turn of events, video footage of seven shirtless men with dangerous weapons roaming on the streets of Deepam Nagar near Irugur within the Singanallur police limits was captured on the CCTV camera of a house in the area, on July 23. This has caused panic amid the public in the area.
The police are meanwhile investigating the identity of these mysterious men.Further an unidentified man was arrested within the Sulur police limits yesterday and the police are investigating to identify if the man belonged to the group.
